First Ride After Winter Storage: Checklist
Do not let the first warm day be the only inspection. Work through the motorcycle before returning to public roads.

Market context: India
Indian registration, road tax and insurance can vary by state and vehicle. Verify current requirements with the relevant state transport authority and insurer.
- State-level variation is important for registration and road-tax planning.
- Third-party insurance requirements and renewal should be verified with an authorised insurer.
- Traffic, heat, dust, monsoon conditions and workshop rates can materially change maintenance costs.
Seasonal and storage note: Monsoon storage, humidity, dust and long periods of non-use can affect chains, brakes, batteries and fuel systems.
Rules, fees and requirements can change. Check the linked official source for the current position.
Before starting
Check tire pressure, tread, cracks and flat spots. Look for leaks around the engine, cooling system, brakes and fork. Check oil, coolant and brake fluid against the manual’s marks.
Reconnect or inspect the battery, then test the headlight, high beam, brake light, signals, reflectors, horn and instruments. Inspect chain slack and lubricate if it is dry.
Fuel and brakes
Check for fuel smell or leaks before starting. Follow the manufacturer’s advice if fuel has been stored for a long time, and do not use a damaged battery or charger.
Test both brakes while stationary. Controls should feel firm, but the real test belongs on a safe, low-speed ride with plenty of room.
Take a short, gentle test ride
Start slowly and leave extra following distance. Test steering, clutch, shifting, throttle return and braking progressively, and listen for new noises. Avoid passengers, high speeds and a long trip until the bike proves reliable.
After a few kilometres, park safely and check for leaks, unusual heat, tire issues and chain condition. Confirm registration and insurance, including any restrictions that applied while it was stored, before riding normally.
Choose a route where you can turn back easily. Cold tires and early-season temperatures behave differently from a warm summer ride. If the brakes feel soft, the bike pulls, a warning light stays on or the engine runs poorly, stop and investigate before normal riding.
Keep a simple record
Note the date of the battery check, fluid inspection and any parts that need follow-up. This helps separate a normal seasonal check from a fault that needs a technician and gives you a useful record for the next storage period.
Storage context for India
Adapt storage and return-to-road checks to the climate and public-road rules in India.
