Service, oil and valve checks
Most bikes have service intervals set by mileage or time, with a bigger valve-adjustment service due at higher mileage. Dealer labor rates commonly run north of $100 an hour, so shop service on a complex bike adds up quickly.
Oil changes, chain adjustment and basic upkeep are well within reach for a DIY rider, and doing them yourself cuts the cost substantially.
Tires, chains and wear items
Tires, brake pads and the chain or belt are wear items on a schedule. Powerful bikes chew through tires faster, and a mounted set of quality tires is one of the larger recurring costs.
Chain-drive bikes need regular cleaning and lubing, while belt and shaft drives ask for less. Budgeting for these ahead of time keeps them from becoming a mid-season surprise.
