What Does It Really Cost to Own a Motorcycle?

The sticker price is only the down payment on the real cost. Ongoing ownership costs come back every year, and they add up faster than most riders expect.

The fixed costs

Across many models in the calculator, insurance and depreciation are among the larger line items, but the order depends on the bike and your assumptions. Depreciation can be steepest in the first few years on a new bike, while a clean used bike may hold its value better.

If you financed the bike, interest is a real cost too. On a multi-year loan at today’s APRs, the finance charges alone can rival a full season of gas.

The variable costs

In the calculator, fuel, service, tires and oil scale with mileage and model-specific assumptions. A high-horsepower sportbike may therefore receive a higher estimate than a cruiser or commuter in the model list, but your own figures can produce a different result.

Tires catch a lot of riders off guard. A sport-touring rear can be done in well under 10,000 miles, and a fresh set mounted and balanced is a meaningful chunk of the annual budget.

Gear and the extras

Riding gear is part of the true cost of ownership. A quality helmet, jacket, gloves and boots add up, and most riders replace a helmet every few years.

Choosing the right bike for how you actually ride can help control costs. In this calculator, a midsize bike often has lower default insurance and maintenance assumptions than a big bagger or a liter-class sportbike, but your own quote and riding pattern may produce a different result.

Commonly overlooked costs

A complete budget should leave room for replacing helmets and other gear, batteries, chains and sprockets, brake components, and unexpected repairs. These are not added automatically because the need varies so much between riders.

Parking, paid storage, financing interest, tolls, sales tax, title and registration fees can also sit outside the calculator total. Treat the estimate as a comparison baseline, then add the costs that apply to your situation.
