The True Cost of Owning a Motorcycle

A realistic motorcycle budget separates mileage-driven costs, fixed annual model estimates and expenses that arrive only occasionally.

What the calculator includes

The calculator includes fuel, insurance, service/maintenance, tires and depreciation. Fuel scales with annual mileage. Insurance, service/maintenance, tires and depreciation are fixed annual model-based costs under today’s calculator logic.

These are budgeting estimates, not quotes. Replace them with your own insurance premium and known costs when you have them, and use the result to compare models on consistent assumptions.

Costs outside the estimate

Plan for helmets and riding gear, storage, parking, tolls, loan interest, sales tax, title and registration fees and unexpected repairs. State and local fees vary, so check your DMV or tax office.

A new motorcycle may have warranty and service costs that differ from an older used bike. Seasonal storage coverage, mileage and where you live can also change the cash flow across the year.

Build an honest budget

Start with the calculator’s annual total, add the costs it does not include, and set aside money monthly for tires, service and repairs. Divide by expected miles if you want a broader cost-per-mile view.

Costs vary with model, age, rider, ZIP code, usage and market. There is no single national average that describes every rider. Use your own quotes and receipts when making a purchase decision.

Separate purchase price from annual ownership cost. A less expensive used bike may need more maintenance, while a new bike may have more depreciation and financing cost. Build low, typical and high scenarios from your own insurance and shop quotes, and keep one-time costs outside the calculator total.

What the calculator does not calculate

The calculator does not automatically include financing interest or fees, purchase or sales taxes, title or registration fees, riding gear, accessories, parking, paid storage, tolls or unexpected repairs. Add these items separately when building your own budget.
