Annual registration, plate renewal, title and inspection requirements vary widely by state. Some states also apply local or personal-property-style taxes to vehicles.

Taxes and one-time costs
Sales tax at purchase is often the largest one-time hit, and a handful of states also charge an annual personal property tax on the bike. Title and transfer fees apply when you buy or sell.
Helmet and gear laws differ by state as well, which can shape what you spend on equipment. All of it belongs in the picture when you weigh a purchase.
